Kidney Stone Removal (PCNL)

What is Kidney Stone Removal (PCNL)?
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive surgery used to remove large, complex, or multiple kidney stones when medicines or shockwave therapy don’t work. During the procedure, the surgeon gives anaesthesia and makes a small cut in the back, directly accessing the kidney to remove the stones. As a result, most patients experience less pain, minimal scarring, and faster recovery.
Dr. Davinder Singh is highly experienced in PCNL procedures, ensuring safe and complete kidney stone clearance with minimal scarring and faster recovery.

Who Needs PCNL?
We recommend PCNL when:
- Stones are larger than 2 cm
- Multiple or staghorn (branch-like) stones are present
- Stones are too hard or large for laser or shockwave treatments
- Previous procedures like URS or ESWL have failed
- Patient is in severe pain or has infection/obstruction
Diagnosis
Diagnosis includes:
- Clinical evaluation of abdominal pain
- Blood tests to check for infection
- Ultrasound or abdominal CT scan for confirmation
How PCNL Works
- Anesthesia is given (usually general)
- A small incision is made on the back
- A tube is passed into the kidney
- Stones are broken using special instruments
- Fragments are suctioned or removed
- A temporary stent or nephrostomy tube may be placed
- The incision is closed with minimal stitches
Surgery time: ~1 hour
Hospital stay: 1–2 days
Benefits of PCNL
✅
- Removes even the largest kidney stones in one go
- Minimally invasive, less pain than open surgery
- High success rate
- Quick recovery time
- Very small scar
- Can treat stones that failed other treatments
